Limerick CC Henry Cook takes Stage 1 of Rás Mhaigh Eo

Ras Mhaigh Eo Race Stage 1 Race Report

On a near perfect morning,  the weather at last trying to put the winter behind us 130 plus riders signed on for Rás Mhaigh Eo with big teams and strong riders stage 1 was always going to be a close affair.

The first hour was rode at 43kph and the few early attacks came to nothing.

The pre-race favourite Daire Feeley Team iTap, was marked out of contention and there was no obvious successor willing to take control.

Lucan had a couple of men up the road at various stages but nothing stuck.

When the race turned back for Westport after Coraun a side wind threatened to split the race with the group lined out.

But everything was back together on the Mulranny KOH and it looked like everyone was setting in for a bunch sprint.

The Covey Wheelers took up the mantle for the Newport sprint but narrowly missed out.

On the final run in towards Westport a couple of attacks were made but all were quickly pulled back.

The final KOH at Barley Hill help to spread out the field but everyone bunched again with 500m to go.

In the end Limerick CC rider Henry Cook managed to out sprint Liam Corcoran from Castlebar CC.
