The event which is steeped in rich history is the launch pad and an integral part of cycling Ireland’s high performance development pathway. As is the case for the current crop of Irish grand tour, and track cycling superstars we are hopeful that the stars of the future shine brightly in Westport.
The championship is an Umbrella event for 3 individual cycling titles, Time Trail, Road Race, and Criterium, contested in age category from 11 to 16 years, for both male and female athletes. All combined the event creates a festival of cycling with near 30 races being staged over the 2 days Westport Covey Wheelers as a voluntary community focused Senior and Youth development cycling club has set 3 key goals for the Championship
1) Stage a safe and enjoyable best in class event for all participants in compliance with Cycling Ireland directives following the spirit of fair play
2) Promote the activity and sport of cycling, in line with Westport’s strategic plan for smarter travel, and best places to live.
3) Promote the County of Mayo and the town of Westport as a premier National location for activity based tourism.
In short we endeavour to make this an enjoyable experience for everyone involved while the race stages have been designed to be safe, challenging and rewarding reflecting the character of the local environment.
The first race early Saturday Morning is a 8Km Time Trial from Murrisk (Bottom of Croagh Patrick) to Westport (Skate park) followed by an afternoon Road Race on the Aughagower Circuit (circa. 9 kmlap) with a finish at the top of Cailleach hill for the older athletes.
The event concludes with what should be a spectacular Criterium around the Streets in the centre of Westport on Sunday Morning. Without the efforts of the relevant Authorities, Businesses and the people of our community none of this would be possible and we ask that you support the people who support us.
Enjoy, travel and race safely,
John Doherty Race Director
