Strong showing from Westport in the Holian Cup

The 2021 Holian Cup took place last Friday night in Cong with a large field of riders from A1 to A4.

Westport CC were well represented with a ten man team taking part. The race was run on a 11km circuit passing through Cong, Cross and the Neale for five laps totaling 55km. The Holian Cup is run with a handicap system in place were the A3 riders received a one minute and thirty second head start on the A2 bunch and the same time gap was given between the A2 and A1 bunch meaning a 3 minute gap from back to front. This system encourages fast riding with a chase on right from the start!

Our A3 riders worked well while up front and shared the workload and maintained a good average pace of over 42km per hour. The pace was hot back in the A1 field with average speeds of 45km per hour and this was enough to catch all the groups up ahead with one and a half laps to go! With all the groups together the attacks started and Westport made sure that they were represented in every break. The deciding move came with one full lap to go where Daire Feeley attacked and brought five riders with him including Anthony Murray from Westport CC. The race was to be decided between these five and in the end Feeley proved too strong with a fast sprint to the line, however it was another podium finish in a week for Westport with Anthony finishing 3rd on the night.

It was a fantastic team performance with strong rides from Declan Gallagher and the evergreen Colm Staunton covering many moves. A special mention for our newest team member Paul Geraghty who rode his first race in the A4 race and did very well on the  night.

The Team on the night were Richard Meaney , Anthony Murray, Colm Staunton, Declan Gallagher, Robert Coakley, Brian Glavey, Michael Flynn, Niall McLaughlin, Lee Tuffy, Paul Geraghty. Team managers Noel Brady, Kieran Mulchrone and Ray Staunton
