Welcome to Westport Triathlon Club
Who are we?
Westport triathlon club currently has around 40 members who meet up to train and socialise in preparation to complete or compete at triathlons. We organise coached training for swimming, cycling and running disciplines and also organise races through out the year including an aquathlon series and a sprint triathlon in Westport during the summer, dates TBC.
We cater for everyone from beginners in all three disciplines to people who have experience and to want improve. Triathlon is the fastest growing sport in the world and this is evident by the amount of triathlons that are held around the country each year between April and October. It’s a great way to see the country, keep healthy and take on a new challenge.
Triathlon is a challenging but rewarding sport, so take up a new challenge for 2012 and join us!
What is Triathlon?
A triathlon is a multi-sport event involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance events. Triathlon involves swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall course completion time.
Triathlon races vary in distance. The main race distances are Sprint distance (750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run), Olympic distance (1.5 km swim, 40 km ride, 10 km run), the Half Ironman (1.9 km swim, 90 km ride, 21.1 km run), and the Ironman (3.8 km swim, 180 km ride, and a marathon 42.2 km run).
Transition areas are positioned both between the swim and bike segments (T1), and between the bike and run segments (T2) and are where the switches from swimming to cycling and cycling to running occur. These areas are used to store bicycles and any other accessories needed for preparing for the next stage of the race. The time spent in T1 and T2 is included in the overall time of the race.
What would I need to do a triathlon?
The greatest hurdle for most beginners is that they may not be able to swim or have not swam in a pool since they were young. We cater for absolute beginners and improvers in swimming. You will need a wetsuit to swim in Irish waters, but these can be picked up at quite low cost these days.
When it comes to the cycling bit, no need for a fancy bike, you can use any bike you want (Mountain, BMX or High Nelly). A road bike is the best choice, but many people do triathlons on whatever bike they have to hand.
As for running, all you need is a pair of comfortable runners.
When you start off there might seem to be a lot of equipment required, but beg and borrow to get yourself started and the more you do, the more equipment you will build up over time.

Club membership options
To join WTC you will need pay a club membership, take out a Triathlon Ireland Membership. We also recommend that our members take out a cycling Ireland license as well. When you pay your membership to WTC, you will also become a member of the Westport Covey Wheelers at no extra charge. This will allow everybody to train together and be completely covered for insurance. If you do not take out a Cycling Ireland License you cannot cycle with the Covey Wheelers either in training or racing.
