Westport Credit Union ‘Mickey Palmer Time Trial Challenge’ 2013

This year as part of Paddy’s weekend, Westport Covey Wheelers will be hosting 2 cycling events. The first of which is The Westport Credit Union ‘Mickey Palmer Time Trial’ on the Sunday 17th March followed by The Bourke Waste Ras Mhaigh Eo on Monday 18th.

The Mickey Palmer Time Trial Challenge is a 38km Individual Time Trial, a race against the clock. Starting at The Skate Park on the West Road heading for Louisburgh cyclists will start off at 9.30am at one minute intervals. The turnaround point will be at Cill Cluain housing estate just before Louisburgh turning for the journey back to the finish line beside Horkan’s garden centre on the West Road. With a limited number of starting times available cyclists are being urged to pre-register by using the form below. Entries are set at 10 euro and there will be prizes in all license categories.

Mickey was the 50mile National Time Trial Champion in 1956 and entered the Ras a number of times in the 1950’s. Read about the legendary Westport cyclist Mickey Palmer in the book: The Story of Mickey Palmer : Woollen Jerseys an’ Whiskey Legs. The book gives an insight into the life of a top class national cyclist in the 50s and 60s, weaving a story that incorporates the legendary Ras Tailteann in the setting of 1950s Ireland.
