Group 1 Race Report
Round 4 of the Covey league started off with 9 riders leaving from the train station heading out the Ballinrobe road towards the Srah loop. The weather was in our favour as it was warm with very little wind.
We kept a steady pace with everyone working at the front which allowed us to average a speed of around 37 KPH. Early on a few attempts were made to break away by Keith O’Connell and Michael Flynn but were caught by the group in quick time. Keith was held up with a puncture after hitting a large stone in the middle of the road, however he soon re-joined the group.
Going around the Srah loop attacks were also made by Ger, Colm and James which ended with Ger Corcoran breaking away after we joined back on the Ballinrobe road. He worked hard to pull a gap of around 30 seconds and whilst he was on the break the rest of us kept up a steady pace of up and over resulting in us catching him on the first hill of the Aghagower road.
On approach to the final hill, Keith had a small lead but was caught by Colm, Sean and Ger. Sean Flynn crossed the finish line first quickly followed by Colm Staunton in second, Ger Corcoran third and Richard Meeney fourth.
The choice of a hill finish certainly satisfied those who wanted a tougher challenge.
1st Sean Flynn – 5pts
2nd Colm Staunton – 4pts
3rd Ger Corcoran– 3pts
4th Richard Meeney – 2pts
Group 2 Race Report
The race set off at a fast pace with the blazing hot sun in our faces. There was a lot of attacks off the front but nobody succeeded. The group was not very controlled on the way out with everybody fighting for position at the front but it settled as the race carried on.
On the way back, the odd person broke, and again everything was chased down straight away.
As we got closer to the finish, people were panicking about position and before I knew it I was off the front with Sean Hastings. The group were going to gobble us up so I went again… and I won!!!
1st Aaron Doherty – 5pts
2nd Brendan Conway – 4pts
3rd Sean Hastings – 3pts
4th David Rodgers – 2pts
Group 3 Race Report
First off, I’ve to put my hand up and say I didn’t do an ounce of work at the front of the race all night. Having done my fair share in any other race with no reward, I decided to sit back and see what happened.
What was ideal conditions for racing, things stayed fairly civilised for most of the night. Nothing like round 3 where average speeds went through the roof.
As soon as we turned for home after 20k the attacks started to happen. I was so far back I’m not sure which two made the first attack but they were reeled in fairly quickly. As in many rounds, the younger lads made a go it but were unsuccessful. It only a matter of time before they will get away.
With about 12k to go Ann-Marie made some strong moves but the tempo was beginning to push on and was caught. Turning left at Walsh’s we were still all together. Having never been in that road before I didn’t know what to expect. I was feeling good so made a break for it before the first hill. It was hit and hope stuff because I was sure id be caught pretty quick.
With 500m to go the i’d the rosary beads out and started to pray fairly hard, I was in ribbons. Declan Maloney was along side me most of the way. When we hit the 100m mark I was on the rivet and barely hanging on. The last 10m were hell and I gave it everything. Thankfully I just about held on for the win.
Thanks to all marshalls to night.
P.s many thanks to Colin Browne for keeping things ticking over during the race, he never let any break get away and pushed us on.
Great to see Padraig Gannon back racing too.
1st Stephen Cowley – 5pts
2nd Declan Maloney – 4pts
3rd Eoghan Carr – 3pts
4th John Lenehan – 2pts
