League standings after Round 10
In the penultimate round of the Western Lakes/Covey Wheelers interclub league Con Doherty, Covey Wheelers, pipped Ollie Whyte his team mate by a solitary second with a time of 21:28 to take maximum points in the 15k Individual Time Trial in Ballinrobe.
On a sunny windswept evening over 30 cyclists turned out to contest valuable points in the League. Westport lead in the Team Classement and signs were on that they had intentions of pushing on with their lead with Tri bars, disc wheels and aero helmets the standard apparel. Having secured 6 places in the top ten they have increased their lead to 241 pts. It now stands Westport Covey Wheelers 2922 v. Western Lakes 2681.
James McGreevey put in another famous display with a time of 22:47 to propel himself into 2nd Overall. Patjoe O’Connell pushed hard to mark his place in the top ten. Colin Kelly was in spectacular form to improve his time by over 2:13mins winning the Most Improved section and has positioned himself for a Top Ten finish.
Earlier in the League Michael Brady and Ger Corcoran held 1st and 2nd respectively but lost to their strangle hold due to commitments outside of cycling. Sean O’Malley will now be crowned the new league winner as his advantage is mathematically unasailable, his performance on the night saw him take 4th place with time of 21:46mins. Other Western Lakers who performed well on the night were Mark Kelly, Shane Gilligan and Martin Joyce, all of which managed to secure valuable bonus points.
It will remain to be seen will Team Covey have the impetus and drive to keep going in the Final round of the League which is a 5km Hill Climb in Tourmakeady on the 20th September. With most of the Top Ten positions to be decided along with the Team Classement a big turnout is expected.
