Breheny Shield Covey League Rnd 3 – Race Report
A good crowd of 52 eager cyclists turned out at the Train Station for what was to be a very tactical race. Thankfully the rain stayed away for long enough and thanks to the regular marshalls who helped out once again.
Group 5, the underage category, were set off early and were turned at the Tourmakeady turn off. Keith Hastings took the spoils with Ben Walsh and Declan Maloney 2nd and 3rd respectively. Keith showing that his consistant training regime is starting to show dividends.
Next up were Group 1 who were jumping and breaking all night long. The intention was to ensure Ger Corcoran did not take the 5 points and keep some order on the overall league standings. With attack after attack (and wrong turns) it was not long before the group was whitled down, some riders managed to bridge the gap as the ‘cat and mouse’ games began at Morans garage. Michael Brady returning from the Ras was in spectactular form and outsprinted the bunch, Colm Staunton took 2nd and Ger Corcoran 3rd.
In Group 2 Patjoe O’Connell, last years winner of the inaugural Breheny Shield, had to contend with similar tactics in his group but managed to outsprint Tom McGreal and Joe Browne when it mattered. Group 2 showing that there is some depth and strength to the Covey squad this year having reduced the time gap down from 3 minutes to 30seconds on the so-called scratch group!
In Group 3 Sean Flynn managed to peel away from the bunch in the last 100 yards. The 15year old showing his raw talent for the sport and that he is one of the Covies rising stars! The bunch sprinted for the line with………taking second by half a wheel over……..in 3rd.
Unfortunately Group 4 had a serious accident inside the last 3km so they all finish on the same points. We wish everyone involved a speedy recovery and quick return to the bike.
Well done to all who took part, below is the full league table:

‘Calling all Coveys’ – we are closing in on the Team Category Classification in the Mayo Cycling League. In order to overtake Western Lakes we will need large turnouts for the next two rounds. It doesn’t matter if you did not participate in the first Hill Climb or Time Trial as you can still score points for the club.
